Why do I owe money back to Financial Aid?

The Federal Pell Grant Program is an investment in students, based on financial need. The funds come from "tax payer money."

Students are required to repay money to Financial Aid in certain circumstances. To oversimplify, in these cases, a student has received more money than they qualify for under the federal regulations. The important point, though, is that repayment is due to student actions that changed how much s/he is eligible to receive from the federal government.

What student actions change your financial aid eligibility, and thus require you to repay Pell Grant funds? You will owe Financial Aid money if you take any of the following actions AFTER RECEIVING YOUR PELL GRANT DISBURSEMENT CHECK.

1. Reduce your credit courseload. If you drop below 12 credits (full time), you will owe back a substantial amount of money.

2. Substitute an online course for a regular course. Online courses cost more.

3. Withdraw from all of your courses prior to the 60% completion of the course material.

4. Fail, or fail/withdraw from all of your courses.
