On the one hand, online courses offer great opportunity - flexibility, online discussion, instant access to ideas and materials. On the other hand, a good number of students fare worse in online courses than classroom courses. So how can you take advantage of the benefits of online courses without tumbling into its pitfalls?
Tip #1: Know how to use D2L. If you don't know how, set up a meeting with your educational case manager immediately.
Tip #2: Treat your online class like a class. Read the course syllabus and assignments. Take notes. Use a quiet, private space whenever you are online for class.
Tip #3: Take initiative to manage your time. Schedule 6 to 9 hours each week devoted exclusively to your class. Submit your assignments on time. Keep pace with the syllabus. DO NOT FALL BEHIND!
Tip #4: Participate online. Log in to your class and add to discussion boards at least three times per week. Read the comments of your peers and instructor on discussion boards. E-mail your instructor with questions frequently.
Tip #5: Ask for help. It is very easy to be invisible online - don't be! E-mail your instructor if you are falling behind or are having technical problems. Use TRIO Scholars and other student support resources.
