Choosing Where to Transfer: Cost and Value

Look at these three sandwiches. Tell me, which is the best cost and which is the best value?

The best cost is relatively easy to determine - just look at the price tag. But value is more complicated. The price might be right, but is it what you are looking for? Alternately, it might be the most expensive sandwich out there, but is it necessarily the best? Value depends on cost, but it also depends on what you specifically want and need.

Metaphorically, the same considerations impact your selection of a transfer institution. You are ultimately looking for the best value, the most bang for your buck, the best investment of your money based on your particular situation. Cost is a large part of this equation, but certainly not the only factor to consider when choosing a transfer institution.

If you choose the most inexpensive transfer option but it does not adequately prepare you for the career you wish to pursue, is it a good value? Alternately, you may find everything you are looking for at expensive university, but if you cannot repay your debt after graduation, is it worth it? It all depends on you.

Not all colleges and universities are the same. Ultimately, you are looking for the "best fit" based on your unique circumstances. To do so, consider these different factors:

- congruent with academic and life plans
- "feels right"
- unique programs or opportunities
- alumni success
- reputation
- the price is feasible
- financial aid packages available
