Do tests make you anxious?

On the day of a test, are you cool and confident, or a nervous wreck? Test-taking anxiety - described as suffering from an irrational fear of test material that paralyzes your thinking and inhibits your performance - negatively affects many students. "I know how to do this...but I just can’t remember at the moment...aarrgghhh!"

Some students reduce their test anxiety through preparation.

- Don't just memorize the material, LEARN it with good study skills. Short-term memory is the first thing to go.

- Practice in a test environment: practice test, timed, in a classroom.

- Get good sleep the night before and eat breakfast. Do something relaxing beforehand.

Some students reduce their test anxiety through psychological strategies.

- Remind yourself that everyone is a little nervous on test day. It's okay to be nervous.

- Monitor negative self-talk. When doubts or fears creep in your mind, stop them! Tell yourself, "I'm prepared. I know this. I'll do fine."

- Keep things in perspective. Just do the best you can...that is all that can be expected of you.
